Prayer Cards for Holy Thursday:

Glorious Bells! (Bells tell us to pay attention!)

On Holy Thursday (April 9), starting at 7 pm, the special Mass of the Lord's Supper will be live streamed from St. Charles. In ordinary years (and this is no ordinary year!), parishioners are encouraged to bring their own bells with them to Holy Thursday Mass in order to ring them during the very special Gloria (Glory to God) that evening. After the ringing of the bells all through the Gloria, the bells remain silent (to remind us of Jesus death) until the Easter Vigil Mass late on Holy Saturday. Even if you aren't planning on watching the whole Mass with your family, I would encourage you to watch through the Gloria (which is very close to the beginning of the Mass) and ring your bells from home.

Scripture Meditation with Children:

Gather at your prayer table. Light a candle.

Read John 13:1-20, 31-35

Discussion and Wondering Questions:

What happened in this story?  I wonder why?

At the time of Jesus, washing people's feet was an important way of welcoming them to your home, but was usually done by a servant.

Is Jesus a servant? Why do you think he washed his disciples feet?

Did Simon Peter want his feet washed? Why not? What happened?

What was the new commandment that Jesus gave to his disciples?

(Can re-read the Scripture if desired.)

Leave some time for a little silence (no need to hurry the children with answers, no need to come up with answers for them - it is good for them to wonder).
Ask if the children would like to say anything to Jesus.
It may help to ask if there is anything they would like to thank Jesus for.
End with a song.
